March 25, 2009

Dad that's all great news!!! That's so cool that Kevin is the Bishop. Congratulate him and let him know that there is hand raised in sustaining vote from Chicago, from the top of the highest building. I'm so glad to hear that you can go to the Temple. I know that was a rough time for all of us last year, but I'm so happy for you. The blessings of the temple are great and infinite, that is the house of the Lord, and a place for cultivating revelation. It's an opportunity to hear what the Lord has to say. I love you dad you've done well. Wow I want to hug you right now so bad.

So I have 3 scriptures for you. 3Nephi 12:24-the last line is the statement the Lord has for us, it's what he wants us to do. He will receive us.
3Nephi 13:8- The Lord already knows what we need, he just wants to hear us say it!
3Nephi 13:21- This is a good guiding principle for our lives, if we are mindful of this then we know the path that we are on and are following.

DAD, I love you so much. You're a great father and you've taught me so much.

PS -Some members gave us a gift card for $30 to GIORDANO's, it's a famous Chicago Pizza place. Now there's other things I'd rather have if I were to choose, but my companion says you have to try another pizza place besides the one I had when I first landed in Chicago. So On friday we are going to GIORDANO's to celebrate his birthday which is on sunday. I'll tell you how it is.

Wow wow. Sounds exciting. We are taking our bikes downtown today, so I have to be brief. Ask Amber if she's ever heard of Chi Running. This lady we are teaching has been telling me about it. Also I wanted to tell you about shirts for Josh. You don't need that many short sleeves. You gave me six. I could probably send you home two of them, and would gladly except two more long sleeve shirts in return. In fact let's plan on that. I just wear the long sleeves a lot more. Also I wanted to see if you could go to costco and pick me up some ankle socks there. They are the ones that Debbie would get me. The have a "kb" on the top by the toes. I think they might actually be womens socks, but they are great "No show socks" and are great for running, my favorite. If you could pick my up some of those that would be great, my ones hear have holes, but we are holding out. I've also broke two shoe laces. I thought of something cool also that the easter bunny could hop out here to Chicago. One of those Excercise balls that dad has. They have one in the gym here and I really like it, but I won't be here forever. I wanted to say thanks for the facial stuff also it's awesome!! We are going to check out where some of Capone's gang shootings went down today. So the Chinese people that we are teaching.....The one lady we can't teach anymore because she is with a university in China that is owned by the government and their army. They work on top secret aerospace projects. They made her sign a contract that she will not have contact with Mormon's. They showed her a video of how we are supposedly connected with the FBI. She doesn't believe this, but she has to honor this, because if they were to find out that we were meeting with her it could be devastating to her career and status. She can't even take the BOM that we gave her in Chinese back to China!!!So Beverly's Baptismal date didn't hold, she's having some troubles. Things will work out though, she has great faith and is going to continue to pray. She really knows how important this is and wants to do it but she wants it to be something she can hold strong to. I've felt the spirit strong this week. The Book of Mormon is true, it contains Christ's words and a special spirit. This book is the greatest thing to ever happen to the Christian world. I know it's true, and Joseph Smith God's prophet of this last dispensation. I've felt the Saviors watchful eye and helping hand. I've felt his love confirm to me these truths. This work is so true. I am involved in something so much bigger than me, and it's a priviledge I'm even allowed near it. The priesthood of God is restored. Those important keys are here on the earth, and they are here to bless us. God has entrusted me with a portion of this power also. This is Christ's one true Church. The spirit confirms this. Everyone will soon know and feel. I will work and teach and testify with all that have to bring souls unto Christ. He is my Lord and my God, to him I praise and give thanks. It is him who has redeemed me. In His holy name. Amen.

I love you mom, and family

Elder Adams

PS-Conference is coming up, wow that went fast, I can't believe it's my second one in the mission.

So my companion does this MMMMM thing just like you. Especially about food, but he does it with other things. It reminds me of you.
Sweet, I'm glad that you love the Book of Mormon. That is powerful spiritual nourishment, a foundation for testimony. I'm glad you like what I highlighted. Yes did get her letter a long time ago, but I haven't responded. I'm horrible at doing that kind of stuff. Maybe I'll get around to it, but just tell her thank you.
Here's your scriptures for the week
Luke 9:59-62
That's what I've got for you this week.

Enjoy the temple, go in the spirit and prepare your mind and heart. It's a great experience and a great opportunity. The temple is so special. I've had some great experiences in the temple, that truly is God's house, and it's hard to go into someone's house and not meet the owner. It is the Lord's house. It's a place of spiritual strength and rejuvenation, and revelation. Enjoy it and spend some time in prayer and scripture study in the celestial room and take time to enjoy the beauty. Oh, the temple is great. You'll love it and I'm excited to hear from you. Love you tons bro and I'll hear from you next week.

March 18, 2009

Well bud, I'm glad that you liked the BOM, and it's good to hear that mission prep is going great. While I was on exchanges with the Zone leaders, I talked to a guy yesterday in Chicago, who lives in Lincoln Park. He served his mission in Austria and he DID BAPTIZE!! He said you have to apply yourself. Now you can't measure your success by how many notches you have on your stick, because he didn't have a lot of baptisms. I asked him for the one bit of advice that I could give to you and he said, "Endure to the End." That's what you have to do, people are tough and you have to be strong and bold. There were a couple times this week when my companion was in a bad depression and he didn't want to talk to anyone so I talked to the people at the doors and he would stand there. Sometimes you have to do hard things, you put up your shiel, gird up your loins, and get in the battle. Even if your companion doesn't want to. Stay strong, fight hard, this is our battle, the Lord saved us for this dispensation to fight the war. This Church and Gospel are so true, you don't realize the severity of it. We have a Prophet of God on this earth directed by Jesus Christ. This work is of God, may I ever reiterate that. I know these things to be true. In Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

PS Good to hear from you finally.

I'm online, but today is going to be quick because we are going downtown for p day. There's only this one and one more left in this transfer.
Well done bud. I love your determination to succeed. That will take you far. Keep pushing, but stay humble and recognize the Lord's hand in all things. How far are you in the BoM. Your testimony was great, you taught some important doctrine there and testified of it. It was powerful, thank you so much, I needed to hear that from you. Things are going great. I have a bunch of stuff that I'll put in my letter to mom. Thanks for writing me bud. Keep working on the soccer stuff and I want to hear how things go for you. Oh and yesterday it was in the 70's but today it has cooled down again, oh it was a glorious day.

Love your big Brother Elder Adams

No this transfers is going to be scary, that's why we are spending the next 2 p days in the city to make them good ones. We aren't entirely sure, but we might be hooking up with the zone leaders. Sorry I took so long to write you back.
Wow This week has had a lot of stuff happen. We had an incredible lesson with a lady that we tracted into from China. Her english isn't perfect so we brought a member who served in Taiwan, and when we got there this other guy, a roommate wanted to join in. A third joined by the end. It was a completely different experience teaching the gospel. I started with prayer. We had to teach basics, the very simplicities of the gospel. They were so innocent and childlike, and they had questions. They didn't know really anything about Christ or our Father in Heaven, so it was great to teach them these simple truths. Then to be there and hear the Chinese language spoken, that was really neat. We gave them BOM's in Chinese, and the one lady came to church. Both of them should be at church this week. Then there's the Hatian family that we are teaching with member who speaks creole, which I have learned a few words or phrases. This is so cool, who would have thought that I would be in this position when I got my call a year ago to Chicago. Then we have also began teaching and guy who is Indian, but from South African. He's really cool!! He's competed at collegiate and national levels in Karate and Ballroom dancing. The diversity is incredible here, and the experiences are enthralling. I couldn't believe it when I walked out of that lesson with those 3 Chinese immigrants. I know one of them had only been here since last October. The others probably less than that.Great news, we set a Baptismal date for Beverly Williams for March 28. The thing is though that we did it as a way for her to excercise her faith. She wants us and the member that was present to pray hard. She doesn't want anyone else at church to know about it. This is just her stepping out there and doing a test of her faith. She's going to pray and if she doesn't feel comfortable then she'll pull out of it. The other part of setting her conditional date was that she would have a baptismal interview to help her prepare and help her feel comfortable. I think some of President Stoddard's wise and kindly advice would do her well. She needs that peace and comfort from someone older. We are also going to have her talk to a member that is a baptist convert. The thing is Beverly feels that by getting baptized this again she will be erasing all that she has loved before and those things she held dear are gone. We are having dinner over at her place tomorrow. We are all going to be praying hard for her, and I'm sure there will be some fasting in there. I was glad when Sunday night Elder Brown came out of 4 day block of depression. Saturday and Sunday were the worst. His depression started on Thursday and there were ups and downs, and night I thought he might be getting better. Then there was Friday which was when we called and talked to you so you know how most of that went. Saturday it hit hard. He was laying on the floor during part of Personal study. He told me in the car that day that he was scared about life. Other voiced thoughts including he was trying to "live day to day without dying." This was deffinately tough on him. I had asked him at one point if he felt like talking to people and I was fortunate to get a head shake. I tracted door to door while he stood at the bottom of the steps or stood in the background. I think he did talk to one house while I was talking to someone in their car, and then he did the last door of the street, after an hour of tracting. We went to the Lake Front to try and change scenery and get him to snap out of it. He tried talking to a couple people and then he sat on a rock on the beach while I walked and talked to people with their dogs on the beach. (One of the creatures bit me: makes for a great story). He told me how he had thought "What if I need to go home." We stopped while we were tracting and talked about this, and he started crying a bit. He was confused and didn't know what he needs to do. Sunday it continued, even at church. I tracted for a bit in the morning by myself, before church. Then I tracted door to door again by myself after church before our dinner appointment. He started to lift a bit at the end of the dinner appointment. At the end of the night he was acting a little better. Monday brought sunshine and a new Elder Brown. I had prayed for this because Monday was our appointment with Beverly and I needed him on par. Things went well and he was happy. So that was the longest endurance yet, 4 days, I was glad when that was over. Monday night we started our exchanges with the zone leaders. I went to the Logan Square area in Chicago. We were on bikes all day and it was glorious. It was in the 70’s and I was loving it. The bike seat made my butt a little sore though. It was so much fun though with all the traffic dodging and the excitement of the city again, and the warm weather. It was the best exchange yet. I went running outside in the morning also. I need to get going though but I’ll have to tell you about that dog bit story sometime. I was down on the beach on the Lake front when it happened. I started bleeding and dripping blood in the sand. It was a good time.Oh, and Bill wrote me and told me that he has had his Patriarchal Blessing and he is going to be sustained for the Melchezidek Priesthood at stake conference after General conference. He wants me to confer the Priesthood on him!!! He is also going to be coming to salt lake for the oct conference so maybe you can connect with him. Things are going well. I love you so much mom. Thank you for your testimony, I love to hear it, it is a strength. You know when you bear your testimony your sins are forgiven and it is recorded in heaven for the angels to look upon D&C 62:3. There’s the scripture for the week. I love you and I’ll see you next week. Keep us in your prayers.
I gotta get going if we want to have some time in the city. I love you so much mom and thank you for your testimony. I loved it, there's power there, and I love hearing it from you. Your testimony is strong. Remember a grain of mustard seed can move mountains. Hold strong, and do the hard things even when you stand alone. Love and Prayers,

Elder Adams

March 11, 2009

Yeah we have had a couple of really warm days. It's nice, I think spring might really come. The weather also changes and drops down though. We've had a lot of rain lately, so that's interesting. Actually on Friday my comp and I busted out our bikes and biked that day. It was really nice, but I forgot what it was like to have a seat in between your legs!! I hope you like the hat though, I thought it was awesome. What did you think of those pictures I got of the city at night. It looks like something out of a movie or something.
So in this area there is a family that are members from Liberia, Africa. We've had African food a few times at there house, some is good some is interesting. Once time there was Chicken feet in this sauce that you put over rice. We've also had this stuff called foo-foo, which is like mashed potatoes or malt-o-meal that has been left in your bowl for about 5 hours. It's a cultural experience. Some of the African food I really love though!!
Here's a cool scripture about warning others about danger. It has to do with sharing the gospel with others. I don't know if you have heard this one though. Ezekiel 3:17-19 and then go to Ezekiel 33:1-12. These paint a pretty cool picture for you.
Thanks for writing dad, I love hearing from you. During those cold nights out tracting, anytime I would smell wood burning or a fire going, I would think of times camping, and scouts. Then I would start to tell my companion about those times and dream about a great camping trip.
Love ya tons,
Your Eldest Son

Thank you so much for writing bro. I've seen a bunch of guys getting out and starting to practice soccer here too. I am way excited to hear if you finish the BOM. You think you're a gangster, not even!!! These guys out hear are for real. It's intense. Do you know what a Blue light district is, yeah we have some of those here. Have dad tell you what that means. Being an only child, Think about it you won't have anyone to bug you. You used to always complain about that. Does Josh still tease you or give you a hard time. Oh and you'll have Jack to keep you company. Better yet you'll have more time to read your scriptures. I love you little bro. Talk to ya next week Alma 38:15
Elder Adams
Hi sorry I was writing everybody really quik. We went to the temple today, so we are rushed for time.
I'm sorry I'm sorry, I'm on we can chat. We had an awesome zone conference yesterday, and we have interviews with President tomorrow.
So yesterday at Zone conference President announced who the new mission President will be starting July 1. It is President Doll from Concord, California. He's an accountant. He also told us that because of the baby boomers that the number of missionaries entering the mission field has decreased world wide. Therefore missions are downsizing. Ours is set to downsize from 122 missionaries to 80!!! It will begin to taper down starting in June and will reach the 80 in about September or October. It's Pretty intense, they are going to be combining a lot of areas. I'm going to be writing my letter to you in pieces, so you'll have to piece it together to put in the little book you have. This way I can still check if you've written back.
So at zone conference we have these 5 minute talks that we are told about before and everybody prepares a talk on a given topic and then on the spot president selects three people to give them. I've never had to give one, but yesterday he called me to be the first to speak. I got up and delivered my talk, and got some good positive feedback as they pass the microphone around to critique me. (They do a little critique after you speak). They say the good and the things you can improve on. I went over the time limit by 30 seconds. I also ended up just reading the things that I had written, with very little deviation. Then after the critiqueing, president asked to see my notes. I took them up to the pulpit and then he told me to write on one of the pages of my notebook "Faith in Jesus Christ". Then he asked my companion to pass forward my scriptures. He then said to bring just your scriptures up to the pulpit and give another talk on Faith in Jesus Christ. I went up and delivered another talk. The feeling I had during the talk was completely different. I could feel the spirit, it was just completely different. I spoke for 2 min and 30 sec. I was in the time limit. The feedback from this talk was great. I got so many compliments from people in the office and other missionaries. I was the first person that President had ever done this to before, I'd never seen him do this to anyone. Then he did the same thing to a sister missionary after me, but she had her notebook with her, and she got to pick a Christlike attribute to speak on. It was a great teaching experience, and I learned a lot. The Lord will give you the words to speak. People really liked my talk. The Zone leaders liked both of my talks too. I have a great mission president!!!!

Anyway the weather is starting to warm up. My comp and I biked on friday, I forgot what it's like to have a seat between your legs. It was nice to bike around though. We have had a lot of rain, and we still have some cold days though.

So here's your scripture D&C 58:4, I came across this in the temple today. Love ya tons mom.

Love your first son, Elder Adams

PS- IS it better to buy bars of soap or body wash. I bought three bars for 2.27 and a 12 oz bottle of body wash for a $1. Which is better, which lasts longer. I have a body sponge also to use.

I'm glad to hear that your talk went well. I didn't know if you liked what I had written up. I wish I could have heard your speak. I've never heard you speak or bear your testimony. I love you so much mom. I think this myth about spring might actually come true!!! How great would that be. Next p-day we are going downtown the day after st patty's day, so we will hopefully be able to see the Chicago river that runs all through downtown dyed GREEN. I've hear that they do that!!!!

March 4, 2009

I'm glad to hear it's been a matter of personal prayer. It's also good to hear that you are both dating other people, that's essential. What really struck me about your response though is that you know of the power of the Atonement. I'm glad to hear that you've had the courage to take the course of repentence, because it is rewarding. The Lord will bless you. It's good to hear that you have sought to make yourself a clean vessel to bear the message of the Lord. Just be careful though with Chelsea. I know it might not be a slip up with her that would cause you not to serve, but if she distracts you in any way that's not good either. I just don't want you to get attached to her either. It sounds like she's a great girl and has played a role in your life. I love your Bro and you'll serve great.
It sounds like life is going great for you and for zac. Hopefully you're over that nasty sickness you had. I've got some scriptures for you that I think will help you to prepare. They've been great for me out here on my mission.
D&C 11:12-14- Learning the gospel by the spirit.
D&C 84:103 About families sending out missionaries (Share it with mom)
D&C 84: 63 and 77 and 79-80 and
Follow this chain in section 84, verse 61-62, then vs 94-95 then vs 116. This is what you remember and focus on, this is the Promise of the Lord. I can feel a drive when I remember things like this, when I remember why I am called and by whom. I'm called by the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember him, Remember what he promises you and I. When I remember this I am then given a new drive to go out and share this message with people. I am able to face the rejection and the hate that people have. I know this tool that I've found useful may come in handy for you, reflect on it often.
Love you bro.

Wow look who it is! So how is the day going? We had our apartment inspected today and we got 100. The lady that does it gave us some things, one of which was a nice tie for each of us!!
Wow that's intense. I'm just doing email and what not. Did you resend the puzzles?? And have you gotten a package that I sent home?
Wow sounds like the same process I went through in getting ready for my mission. Tell Josh, that those ear muffs are essential. That and a headband, both on at the same time with my south pole down filled coat hood over the top: HAS BEEN A BLESSING AND HAS SAVED ME MANY A NIGHTS OUT KNOCKING DOORS. Yeah, I wear the head band and ear muffs. All the missionaries own a pair of those ear muffs. I can't believe it's day light savings time, that's insanity. I'm ready for some warm though. Things are going great though. Beverly Williams is really coming along well. She has made it up in her mind that it's only a matter of time before she sets a date to be baptized. She has decided that it doesn't matter what her family thinks of her decision, and that they will all have to save themselves. She has a great testimony, and is an example of obedience. Even when we told her that she couldn't have decaffenated coffee she was still willing to obey. She has been keeping this commitment strong for about a week now. She doesn't even want to substitute anything in its place, she doesn't see how it is harmful, but she still does it. I give her a phone call every morning before we head out the door to see how her morning went and to see how things are going. The ward members love her and the comments she makes. She just seems like a member they say. Keep in mind that this is a 56 year old African American woman who was raised a stalwart Baptist. She's a southern girl, with a great heart. She'll make a great member, in the Lord's time.I've had some great experiences in the scriptures lately, and I've really learned a lot. I really like it though when Elder Brown is in a good mood for study (Which means conversation). Because then he shares some of the stories he's read or things he knows or learns, and then I learn the scriptures and the doctrine better. I'm trying to basically force him to give input on our planning sessions by asking him questions on what he wants to do. I figure if it's a comp. study that he's helped plan he's more likely to be enthusiastic about it. He's been through some rough patches last week, and I've spoken with President on the phone about things. Just keep us in your prayers. The work continues to surge forward. I just love this Mom. Sometimes I have these things hit me during the day I call them epiphanies. I just think "I'm a missionary!!". I am so happy, and I can't believe that I'm a missionary sometimes, it's almost sureal. We had a great experience out tracting yesterday. This African American ladies heart was completely changed as we talked to her and testified. She was contentious, she swore, and then by the end her eyes glistened, she would just stare at me sometimes. She was greatful, and I pulled out a copy of the BOM from my backpack and gave it to her. She was anticipating when we would come back to talk more. It was incredible the change of heart this lady had. It's incredible the power the spirit has on people, and the power that is in our testimonies.

I love you tons mom. It's good to hear all is well. I pray for you and the family and love you all. Thank you for your sacrifices for me.

With Gratitude
Elder Adams
I realize Elder Brown will still have his ups and downs, so I'm learning patience. Like I said though, his mood will just change from one point to another, and this I don't understand. He's most effective when he's in a good mood, and we are a team then. We teach with power and authority, we bear testimony together, we go door to door and share the gospel. However when he's not it a good mood the work is not the same, things are different. I hope he can reach a point when he can fire on all cylinders. Pray for us President, and thank you for all that you do for us. You are an example of self consecration, and may you always be an example for me not only on my mission but throughout my life.
Well then I guess we have to wait then. I'm hopeful that the weather might start to warm up.
Yeah well as far as the Big bad Town goes. We are teaching this guy that is on house arrest for something to do with drugs. He's told us some pretty intense stories. He told us we were courageous for being on the street that we were. He said it's the hottest block in all of Evanston because it is where there is a lot of drugs, and there are shootings that go on. It's pretty intense. We had a close encounter with his Crew when we were talking to him. He told us that if he wasn't there they probably would have robbed us. I'll have to tell you the whole story sometime. There's some intense stories and things that have happened on this street. I love you bro. and it's good to hear from you.

Elder Adams
P.S.- How's the workout plan going?? I want to see if you can read the BOM by JUNE 28.

OH I love you mom, you're some kind of superhero. Conquer on, trust in the Lord and you shall prevail!!!!!!! Read Job 5:17-27
Oh me too mom. I'm just doing sets in the fitness center and walking back and forth checking the mail. Here's D&C 84:103 also, it's about families who send missionaries out.
Love ya mom, good chatting. We are going to check out this big motorcycle showroom. I think it's the biggest in the Chicago area.
